Hit the Trail

Hit the Trail

What would you expect a four-and-three-quarter-year-old to say at the end of a four-and-a-half-mile hike that she just finished using her own two feet? “What a wonderful day,” Sofi announced when we walked past the old Tavern (that I was wishing was still a tavern) at Great Falls National Park.

Public Schools Initiate High School Athletics Fee

Public Schools Initiate High School Athletics Fee

This information comes to us from Prince George's County Public Schools:

Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) has initiated a new annual athletics activity fee for students who are selected as members of an Interscholastic Athletic Team, in response to substantial revenue cuts for the 2011-2012 school year. The one-time fee of $50 will be collected prior to the beginning of each sports season, and will cover the student's participation in high school athletics for the entire year–even if they transfer to another PGCPS school or are selected to participate on multiple athletic teams.

PGA Nationwide Tour comes to Prince George's County

It's the perfect weather for the Fifth Annual Melwood Prince George’s County Open, featuring top professional golf stars competing on the Nationwide Tour at the University of Maryland’s golf course. The tournament runs from May 30th to June 5th.

A few local golfers are in the tournament including: 28-year-old, Naval Academy graduate and Annapolis resident, Billy Hurley. Prior to serving on a Navy destroyer in the Persian Gulf last year, he won seven college titles and in 2004 was the sixth-ranked amateur in the world.

Owned and operated by the PGA Tour, the Nationwide Tour identifies players who are ready to compete and win on golf’s biggest stage. More than two out of three PGA Tour members are Nationwide Tour alumni. Through the efforts of the three tours, sponsors, players, and volunteers, the PGA supports over 2,000 local charities and has surpassed $ 1.6 million in charitable giving.

There are Yoga Classes for Everyone

There are Yoga Classes for Everyone

I have been hesitating to start taking yoga because I am not flexible and all the people I know that take yoga are flexible. Is there a yoga class for me?

Absolutely. The people you know that are taking yoga are flexible BECAUSE they are practicing yoga. They are not necessarily practicing yoga because they are flexible!

Most of the yoga classes offered at studios and fitness centers teach the physical practice of yoga (asana) which is designed to increase flexibility, strength, and balance.

In classes you will be taught how to get into and out of poses safely, lengthen and strengthen muscles and to move in new and different ways than you are accustomed to moving.  New patterns of movement bring on increased flexibility and strength.

Staying Fit Locally, Quit Making Excuses

Staying Fit Locally, Quit Making Excuses

It is predicted that, over the course of the present decade, Americans will be looking to spend less money on exercise options and a lot less time to it due to tighter budgets and hectic schedules. Combine that with a mostly unregulated commercial food industry that still relies heavily on inexpensive and low quality resources high in fat, salt and processed additives. Not enough time to move and poor food choices at the ready. This is our nation’s crisis with obesity, which is expected to climb as high as 85%, up from an already disheartening 60%. Prevention is possible, through awareness and a little creativity. While nutrition accounts largely for body fat content, exercise raises metabolism and muscle can fill up space previously occupied by fat cells. It’s a package deal. Making wholesome food choices (yes, it really is that easy—just do it) will give you energy to work burning fat.
